TH Sound

Are you ready to meet the two different pronunciations of TH?

TH is one of the most problematic sounds for Turkish speakers, because there is no similar sound in Turkish.

TH has both a voiced and an unvoiced pronunciation, represented by the phonetic symbols  (ð) and (θ).

How do we know which to use? Just from looking at the different words you might be able to come up with some rules for these two pronunciations of TH.

In the first position, TH can be either voiced (ð) or unvoiced (θ). When TH is in the middle of the word and surrounded by vowels (breathe, mother, weather), it is voiced. When in the last positions (breath, moth, north), TH is usually unvoiced.
